Top 12 of 2012: 12 Michelle Madow

Welcome to day 12 of my Top 12

Anyone who knows anything about me will know I am a HUGE Taylor Swift fan. she is the only person I have ever seen in concert and I've seen her twice. Her music fills my ipod and she's jsut awesome.

Therefore when I heard about this author and her first book I was so excited. Michelle Madow is just a big a fan as me but she did something truly awesome with it. She wrote 'Remembrance' which is based on Taylor Swift's first big hit 'Love Story'. But Michelle made it so much more, the world, the characters and the story became her own.

I first read that book in October of 2011. Then in October 2012 I read book 2 - Vengeance. This was only a small novella that links book 1 and 3 together but I enjoyed it none-the-less and got even more excited for Book 3. I was part of the 'Timeless' launch tour and had an ARC copy of it to read. It was an excelent end to the trilogy, everything came together perfectly and the series just blew me away.

You can really see how much Michelle has grown as an author and allowed her characters to take you on a journey with them. The stories are beautifully written and keep you totally hooked.
Image from Google.

Shall we just take a minute to look at how gorgeous those covers are. So pretty. I want a mask like that. In fact I would quite like to go to a masked ball based on that whole Regency era, it sounds so pretty in these books, although I wouldn't want to live in it permanently.

Remebrance:
Lizzie Davenport has been reincarnated from Regency Era, England ... but she doesn't know it yet.

Then Drew Carmichael transfers into Lizzie's high school at the beginning of the year, and she feels a connection to him, almost like she knows him. She can't stop thinking about him, but whenever she tries talking with him about the mysteries behind her feelings, he makes it clear that he wants nothing to do with her. Reaching him is even more difficult because she has a boyfriend, Jeremy, who has started to become full of himself after being elected co-captain of the varsity soccer team, and her flirtatious best friend Chelsea starts dating Drew soon after his arrival. So why can't she get him out of her mind?

Even though Lizzie knows she should let go of her fascination with Drew, fighting fate isn't going to be easy.

Vengeance:
How far would you go to get revenge?

When Chelsea Givens discovered that her ex-boyfriend Drew dumped her to be with her former best friend Lizzie, she'd never felt so betrayed in her life. Then her new friend Shannon tells her she can help set things right. Chelsea's willing to listen, but what Shannon wants her to believe -- that she shared a past life with Drew -- is impossible. And what she wants her to do to get him back … well, it's downright crazy.

Could Shannon be telling the truth? And if she is, what lengths will Chelsea go if it means making Lizzie pay?

Timeless:
IT'S A RACE AGAINST TIME.

Strange things keep happening to Lizzie. Things that are omens of darkness to come. A curse has doomed her to die an early death, just as she did in her past life. To make things worse, even if she can figure out who cast the curse, it's irreversible. There's only one option left for her to save herself. It's crazier than anything she's heard yet, and to do it, she'll need Drew and Chelsea's help.

Because to make things right, they must go back to when it all began...

This series is one that took my breath away and left me wanting more. The characters became like my friends and I know I will share their adventures with them again and again.

And this isn't it from Michelle, she's just sold a new series to a publisher, so I will be looking forward to updates about that. :D

I have an exclusive interview with Michelle too:

1) Do you plan your stories/series out before writing or even during, or do you write as it comes?

I always plan my books out before I write them. If I write without an outline, it feels like I'm floundering! I usually stick to my outline, but if a great idea for a different scene pops into my mind while writing, I still include it.

2) Do your characters ever take over and tell you what they want to happen or do you have them firmly reined in?

Since I outline ahead of time, everything is planned already. So I suppose I have them "reined in," although sometimes they say things I didn't plan! (For instance, in the music room scene in Remembrance, Drew was a lot meaner to Lizzie than I realized he was going to be ...)

3) If you could meet one other author (dead or alive) who would you pick and why?

Jane Austen! I would love to talk with her about her character development process, since she has such incredible characters in her stories. Also, it would be beyond cool to meet Jane Austen.

Thanks so much for having me on your blog! :)

Thanks again for having the Transcend Time Saga as your Top 12! <3 div="div">

Thanks Michelle! Appreciate it. :D

Top 12 of 2012: 11 Beth Revis

Welcome to day 11 of my Top 12

This series really surprised me, I had no idea if I would enjoy it when I first picked it up, it was one of those 'recommended reads' that  everyone was talking about so I tried. That's what I love about blogging, you can find some truly awesome books.

Then in April of 2012 book 2 in the series came out and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

It is of course the amazing 'Across the Universe' series by Beth Revis. I read book 1 back in 2011, then 'A Million Suns' in April.
These covers are my favourite designs - so pretty. Unfortunately I can't get hold of them as they keep changing them. These are the new designs:
They are quite cool, but I like the originals better, anyway it's not really what they look like that ultimately counts, but what's inside them. And the content of these is Aweomse!!!!

The last book there is 'Shades of Earth' book 3 in the series, due to come out very soon. I cannot wait. I want it!!!
Even though i have 200 + books on my TBR pile, this is going straight to the top when it comes out. :D

So what are these books about? I'm surprised if you don't know but, lets have a quick recap:

Book 1 - Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

Book 2 - Godspeed was once fueled by lies. Now it is ruled by chaos.

It’s been three months since Amy was unplugged. The life she always knew is over. Everywhere she looks, she sees the walls of the spaceship Godspeed.

But there may be hope: Elder has assumed leadership of the ship. He's finally free to act on his vision—no more Phydus, no more lies.

But when Elder learns shocking news about the ship, he and Amy race to discover the truth behind life on Godspeed. They must work together to unlock a mystery that was set in motion hundreds of years earlier. Their success—or failure—will determine the fate of the 2,298 passengers aboard Godspeed. But with each step, the journey becomes more perilous, the ship more chaotic, and the love between them more impossible to fight.

Beth Revis catapulted readers into the far reaches of space with her New York Times bestselling debut, Across the Universe. In A Million Suns, Beth deepens the mystery with action, suspense, romance, and deep philosophical questions. And this time it all builds to one mind-bending conclusion: They have to get off this ship.

Book 3 - The final book in the  New York Times bestselling trilogy, perfect for fans of Battlestar Galactica and Prometheus!

Amy and Elder have finally left the oppressive walls of the spaceship Godspeed behind. They're ready to start life afresh--to build a home--on Centauri-Earth, the planet that Amy has traveled 25 trillion miles across the universe to experience.

But this new Earth isn't the paradise Amy had been hoping for. There are giant pterodactyl-like birds, purple flowers with mind-numbing toxins, and mysterious, unexplained ruins that hold more secrets than their stone walls first let on. The biggest secret of all? Godspeed's former passengers aren't alone on this planet. And if they're going to stay, they'll have to fight.

Amy and Elder must race to discover who--or what--else is out there if they are to have any hope of saving their struggling colony and building a future together. They will have to look inward to the very core of what makes them human on this, their most harrowing journey yet. Because if the colony collapses? Then everything they have sacrificed--friends, family, life on Earth--will have been for nothing.

FUELED BY LIES.
RULED BY CHAOS.
ALMOST HOME.

How awesome do they sound. OMG I can't believe how much I love this series.
I do not own this image. Copyrigtht to owners. Taken from Google. Image of 'Godspeed' the ship in the books.

I like books that make you think, make you feel, transport you into the world and make you care and these books do that and more. <3

Beth Revis is also a really cool person and I hope she comes to the UK some day so I can meet her and be a total fangirl. :D

Meanwhile - stalk her website.

Top 12 of 2012: 10 C.C Hunter

Welcome to day 10 of my Top 12

I discovered this series in 2012 and fell in love. I signed up to be on the 'Street Team' for promotion of the book and was thrilled to be a part of it.  I read the entire series (all 4 books) in August, I just couldn't get enough.

The covers are beautiful too. Here's a picture of the 4 that are out, book 5 which comes out this year and a short story that has been released:
So,
Book 1 - Born at Midnight
Book 2 - Awake at Dawn
Book 3 - Taken at Dusk
Book 4 - Whispers at Moonrise
Book 5 - Chosen at Nightfall
Short Story - Turned at Dark

I love how the entire series works together and just fits. They look so beautiful!!!

These are the type of books that get you totally hooked in and obsessed. They were literally all I could think about for at least a month. They still remain firmly in my brain even now and I can't wait for the next book.

So here's a little information about the world of Shadow Falls.

Shadow Falls is a camp; presented to parents as a place for 'troubled teens', this is a front for a whole new level of trouble.
Every teen at the camp is special, and not at all what you would expect. Some of them are vampires, some are werewolves, others are Fey, perhaps you would like to meet a witch, or perhaps a shapeshifter. They're all right there. Who said growing up was easy? Not in this camp.

The protagonist of the series is Kylie, sent to the camp with no idea what lies in store for her, once there she ahs to find out just what she is. But what if it isn't as simple as that? Everyone knows she isn't normal, but they don't know what she is either. Being the odd one out is never fun, but even worse when you don't know if you belong anyway.

There is a host of fab characters from 'Holiday' the camp counselor to Kylie's room mates, Della a moody Vampire with an attitude and Miranda a Witch with spell issues. I loved these two, they are fabulous characters.

But what story would be complete without a love interest. Introducing Derek, part Fey and totally lovely. Or his rival, Lucas, werewolf with a temper. I know who I prefer, but according to a poll on C.C Hunter's Website it's 49% - 51%, so practically an even split. (and no I won't say who's winning)

Anyway, just for you the amazing C.C Hunter has agreed to do an interview, so here it is:

-->
1)    When did you first decide you wanted to be a writer?
When I was young, I made up stories in my head.  Long chapter books.  However, because I am dyslexic I never really dreamed of writing until I was twenty-three.  My new husband wanted me to go back to school and become a teacher.  I told him, I didn’t think I wanted to be a teacher.  I confessed something to him that I had hardly even confessed to myself. I wanted to be a writer. But I wasn’t an overnight success. It took me ten years before I sold a book. You see, I was a pretty good story teller, but I had to learn to write, spell, and type.

2)    Do you plot out your stories or do you just sit and write and see where it takes you?
Writer’s call this a plotter or a pantser.  You either plot the story or you sit down and write by the seat of your pants.  And I’m a pantser.  Now, I have to have some idea where I’m taking the story because the publisher will want to know, but nine times out of ten, when I write the story very little of my original ideas are there.  I’m also a character driven writer, and as I get to know my characters better, the plot sort of comes from their story and background.

3)    If you could belong to one of the groups at Shadow Falls (Fairy, Werewolf, Witch, Shapeshifter, etc) which one would you choose?
This is a hard question to answer, because I think they are all cool.  Personally, I made sure all the supernaturals had something special about them.  However, because I’m dyslexic, and dyslexics are known to have some innate ability to read people, I’m already a little bit of an empath.  So I guess I’ll go with Fae/Fairy group.  I think I succeeded at writing not in spite of dyslexia, but in part, due to it.  I think my ability to read people and sense their emotions has helped me write about people and get their emotions on the page.

4)    Were any of the characters based on people you know in real life? Arguing best friends? Dreamy boyfriends? Over protective councillors?
Oh, goodness, I think I’ve had a little bit of all those in my life.  Actually, the arguing friends came from my father and his best friend who grew up with him.  They bicker constantly.  Boyfriends? Oh, my, I had my share of those. And I had some authority figures who took the role a little too far.  I think I take bits and pieces of people I know, and some that I wish I knew--like actors and such--to help me create characters.

5)    Do you find your characters do what you tell them to do or do they try to take over when you’re writing? I would imagine Kylie would by quite willful, and Della, well she certainly has her own mind.
All the time!  I will have an idea how the scene should go and it’s as if the characters will just sit down on the job, and look at me and say, “I’m not doing that, saying that.  I don’t like that idea.”  So I have back up and see what it is that doesn’t fit and when I figure it out, I can move forward.  And you know what, Kylie’s not as easy going as you would think.  I mean sometimes she’s adamantly against what I have planned.  Yes, Della is more stubborn.  I sometime try to put kinder words in her vocabulary, but she will come back with something sassy.  Honestly, when you write a character who doesn’t talk back, it’s a sign that you haven’t really fleshed out that character.  So I guess I’m always happy when the characters become so real to me that they have opinions in my subconscious.

6)    Is there a future for Holiday and Burnett? Can you give us any hints?
Now, now, I can’t give anything away.  But I will say this: I believe in happy endings.  I get so mad when I read a book or watch a movie and things don’t finish well.  I can accept that not everything is tied up in a neat little bow.  Life isn’t always perfect and neither should fiction be.  However, if I wanted to be completely sad or unhappy, I could watch the news.  I want to show characters struggling, but I like it when those struggles are lessons that help the characters end their journey at a good place.
Thank you so much for the interview!

Thanks C.C, great answers and I can't wait for more. Why not check out her website for more information. Or hop onto the Facebook fan page.

If you haven't read this series, it really is a must!!! You won't be disappointed.

Top 12 of 2012: 9 Erin Morgenstern

Welcome to day 9 of my Top 12

This book was one of the first I read in 2012, in fact - checking back it was the 2nd. Yet it was also the book I talked about most I think. I suggested it to everyone, I put the library copy on Display shelves and loved watching it go out and I bought my best friend a copy for her birthday. It has been my obsession for a year now and I still love it.

It's nothing like my usual read, but it is full of magic, mystery, enchantment and wonder. It is of course the wonderful 'Night Circus'
The Night Circus
I need to just say how gorgeous that cover is too. I absolutely love it and sums up the book perfectly. It captures the world beautifully and just looking at it again makes me smile.

Synopsis

The circus arrives at night, without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within nocturnal black and white striped tents awaits a unique experience, a feast for the senses, where one can get lost in a maze of clouds, meander through a lush garden made of ice, stand awestruck as a tattooed contortionist folds herself into a small glass box, and gaze in wonderment at an illusionist performing impossible feats of magic.
Welcome to Le Cirque des Reves. Beyond the smoke and mirrors, however, a fierce competition is underway - a contest between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood to compete in "a game," in which each must use their powers of illusion to best the other. Unbeknownst to them, this game is a duel to the death, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will.

I got totally obsessed with watching Cirque Du Soleil programs on TV, I would absolutely love to see one in real life, I am amazed at what can be done in them, it's real talent and in some cases I do think the performers hold a spark of magic. So this book fit in perfectly and is written so well that I could picture everything. I became part of that world.

So, step right up folks and prepare to be amazed, this circus hold wonders, dangers, mysteries, romance and possibly your hearts desires.

Look round the magnificient ice garden, watch the aerial acts, explore the world of clouds and dreams, see things you have never seen before and fall in love with the Circus. When you are part of the crowd you will know how to show your support. To let everyone know that you follow the circus no matter where it appears. I won't give that secret away here, that's for you to discover. But know that you would definitely see me showing my support.

I have actually started planning a Night Circus style party, I don't know if I'll ever get to bring it alive but it would make a very classy Birthday, Halloween or just special event party. So here's what I would do (If I could afford it all).

Hire a place that has space for a large tent, then hire a Black and White tent - they've got to be available.  If not one of the colours is fine.
Then do some talent scouting, find some performers for your party - acrobats, jugglers etc and specify they need to wear black and white costumes with a hint of red on them -that is important. A scarf, headband, wrist strap, anything.
These would perform around the tent - keeping guests occupied. maybe they could do a small show. Your preference.

All guests would have to come dressed in Black and White - Formal Dress, ball gowns, suits etc. Again they must have a hint of red with them.

Food would be a buffet, something that can be snacked on and easily eaten. Traditional circus food such as Popcorn and candyfloss would be great, then offer something more substantial, something main meal - like Burgers, Sausages. Try to make it look classy though.

Of course a cake is essential. Big, extravagant and fitting in with the theme and colour.

Of course it's a party so music and dancing is a given, any type you like.

The image in my head would probably be something I can never afford, but it looks cool. Anyway I've gone into Fantasy world - I told you I loved this book.

If you haven't read it I really, highly recommend it. It's guaranteed to capture your mind and steal your heart. Just WOW.

Top 12 of 2012: 8 Charlotte Blackwell

Welcome to day 8 of my Top 12

Today's author is someone who I am pleased to call a friend. When Charlotte Blackwell first asked me if I would like to review her book on my blog I looked at it and immediately said yes, she was also the first person I ever interviewed on my blog which was awesome.
Once I started reading, I loved the book and the characters and well - everything. From then on I have been in touch with Charlotte, asking her about the next book, signing up to blog tours and just generally being annoying probably, but she always answers and is a real sweetheart.
The series just keeps on getting bigger and better and I look forward to seeing more. Here are the books so far:
The Embrace Series by Charlotte Blackwell

Synopsis
The story of a girl, her family and the friends she makes along the way. Sophia Pierce not only discovers herself, but the meaning of life, love, family and friendship.

Learning to live life throughout eternity can be difficult, especially as a teenager. With the help of those she trusts can Sophia find happiness, love and learn to accept not only herself, but those around her.  With her best friend Ebony a powerful witch and Nathanial a mortal by her side they must learn to make allies with shapeshifters and other supernaturals. Then they must deal with evil vampires, not to mention all the other trials teenagers go through.

Join the Embrace Series and follow the Pierce family as they grow and see what happens when... Magick Meets Eternity.
They sound awesome, right? That's because they are. The covers have a sort of classic beauty to them as well, but I think the last one is my favourite and it was this book that qualified it for my Top 12 as I read it in April. The characters are like old friends and I love to go back into their world and catch up with them again.
Until that happens again, I have an interview with Charlotte:

-->

1)     When you first started this series, did you ever imagine you would be so successful?

I still can't imagine it. The series has gain a great following and I am so grateful. I have gotten so much fan mail from all over the world and every time it blows my mind.

2)     What has been the hardest thing about writing the Embraced series?

Trying to keep it different from other series out there and still stay true to parts of the story. I don't want people to think I am using other writers ideas, but some parts will be similar due to beliefs, myths and facts. So keeping it original is difficult.

3)     Have there been any changes in plot that you never expected or has everything gone pretty much as planned so far?

There hasn't been many, but a major one was a death that occurred in book 3 Mystic Embrace. When I wrote that scene I was shocked. It worked though, it was unplanned but needed to happen.

4)     Do your characters ever argue back and refuse to do what you want?

Well right now they have refused to visit me. Other than that they have been very cooperative. I just hope they decide to come home to me soon.

5)     Which of your characters would cope best in a disaster?

I think they all deal well in their own way. Ebony is one of the strongest women I know, Nate is so calm in almost every situation and Sophia has learned to be a real leader. Most of all I think that the characters are best at handling situations when they work together.

6)     If your books got made into films who would you want to play the main characters?

That is difficult to answer. I love Zach Effron and think he would be amazing as Nate, but he maybe too old now. I think it would all depend on the timing and age of the actors when it happened. I have always said I would love my eldest daughter to play Sophia, but right now she is still a little young. Hopefully one day we will get a chance to sit down and pick actors to play the Embraced characters.

7)     Do you have to do research for your books? If so what has been the most challenging?

I do tons of research for my books. I have learned so much about Wicca and the practices and beliefs. I want to keep things close to truth even though I write fiction. I also research locations and people for characteristics. The most challenging comes back to originality. The best example of this is my use of day crystals. A similar concept is used in Vampire Diaries. When researching witchcraft I learned of the Lapis Lazlui which is a stone believed to help with disorders of the blood, perfect for vampires. I decided to change this because many don't know this and would see it as outright copying.

8)     Do you have a routine for writing? A particular place, food, music?

Most of my writing is done in my room, it's my safe haven. I love listening to music and am a huge supporter and promoter to many bands that I have discovered and that have helped me with my writing. I even thank a few in book 4 Everlasting Embrace.

9)     Which do you enjoy writing the most, the Good Guys or the Bad Guys?

I like the good guys, I believe I am a good guy and that we need more in our world. It is so easy to take the easy route and turn against others, look out for number one, but there is so much more character to the good guys.

10)  Can you tell us anything about book 5?

There is going to be a ton happening. Sophia and Nate are still in Romania trying to find a way to destroy the Cerberus. Ebony learns to move on and grow, but something will happen that will leave her with a big decision. Caspian and Siobhan rekindle their past relationship and who knows where that will lead. Then of course there is the supernatural school, the angels and so much more. Love, loss, rebirth, defeat, and life ever after.

Thanks for doing that Charlotte and for all your help.

So have you been 'Embraced'?
I know I have. :D

Come back tomorrow for my next pick of 2012.

Top 12 of 2012: 7 Kiera Cass

Welcome to day 7 of my Top 12

I was originally drawn to this book by it's cover. I know, I know - you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but this one was just so gorgeous I knew I had to pick it up.
The Selection (The Selection, #1)

See, isn't it beautiful. I have a thing about fancy dresses and this is just.... WOW.

Then I read the blurb and I thought it was a really different concept and looked like fun. I soon fell in love with the story.

Synopsis
Thirty-five beautiful girls. Thirty-five beautiful rivals…

It’s the chance of a lifetime and 17-year-old America Singer should feel lucky. She has been chosen for The Selection, a reality TV lottery in which the special few compete for gorgeous Prince Maxon's love.

Swept up in a world of elaborate gowns, glittering jewels and decadent feasts, America is living a new and glamorous life. And the prince takes a special interest in her, much to the outrage of the others.

Rivalry within The Selection is fierce and not all of the girls are prepared to play by the rules. But what they don’t know is that America has a secret — one which could throw the whole competition… and change her life forever.

The idea behind this seemed so realistic - like this could happen. These days with shows like Beauty & The Geek, Big Brother etc, it's practically there!
I was actually surprised that I liked it as I can't stand those sort of T.V shows, but for me this book was done just right.

So, here are my tips for surviving if you got picked for 'The Selection'

1) Mind your manners, nobody likes rudeness
2) You don't have to be 'pretty' just be happy with your own assets and know how to look your best
3) Make sure you have an opinion of your own, nobody likes a sheep
4) Be nice to your fellow contestants - after all they're going through this too.
5) Do not trust your fellow contestants - they are in this to win
6) Try not to insult the Prince, he decides whether you stay or not
7) On the other hand, he may appreciate your honesty - tell him what you think!
8) Make sure you know how to dance, it will be expected of you
9) Act like a lady especially when eating. Nobody likes bad table manners
10) Remember where you came from, it made you who you are and ultimately got you picked for this process
11) Don't hold on too tight to your past, learn, grow, develop. Become more.
12) Watch out for back handed techniques and set ups from your fellow contestants. Know how to counter-act their actions. But do not get caught doing anything wrong.
13) Be yourself. That's the most important one!

I made those up, and tried to bass them on America from what I could remember of her character. :D

I read this book back in August and it still floats in my thoughts, I got my own copy for Christmas and was so happy. Definitely going to be a re-read. And now I am counting down until I can get hold of book 2. It's just as pretty.
