My Review
I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have to confess I've had this for ages, I didn't realise just how long this has been on my pile, I knew I was behind with reviews but let me just apologize to the author, I'm so sorry it took so long. This was next on my list and I opened it tonight to remind myself of what it was (sat so long I couldn't remember) And noticed it was only 105 pages which is very short for me so I started to read and had finished it within an hour.
Although this book is so short it covers a lot of quite heavy issues -but does it in a way that doesn't make you uncomfortable which is always good. This book tackles abuse -physical and verbal, rape, and alcoholism. So all very serious subjects.
Emily want to just disappear, if no one can see her, no one can hate her or hurt her anymore, she spends her days with her ipod on and her eyes down. Disappearing into the background. Until she is paired with Jake, star of the hockey team, for a school project. The pair hit it off and Jake is determined to make Emily embrace life again.
This story is bitter-sweet and strikes a chord with you, it makes you really feel for the character and root for their happiness. It's the first in a trilogy and makes you want to read more. I will be looking out for book 2 as soon as possible. It's fast paced and makes you just speed through it. Once you start you won't be able to stop as something is always happening or moving the story forward.
Obviously due to some of the issues dealt with, this book may not be suitable for younger readers
My favourite character is Drake, Jakes' little brother, he's a little spark of light and laughter throughout. Cheeky and hyper with a great sense of humour, he really lightens the tone making this book feel fresh and easier to read.
This book is a sweet little story and perfect for a lazy day read. It may not be perfect literary material but it's definitely worth a read.
