This week's question feature is Paranormal Romance
Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?
My Answer: Well, it's very hard to come up with completely original ideas any more. So many things have been done and done and done. However I get really annoyed when things are more or less just copies, I mean, we could all come up with the idea of a clown who runs away from the circus to join a monastery. Strange i know, but even if ten people had that idea it would evolve into ten very different stories. And that's fine, the chances are they wouldn't all get published anyway. But if someone read this story and decided to write another version of it - then that annoys me.
I love re-tellings as far as fairy tale style. Each one comes over fresh and original because they have very different ideas and plots.
I think I'm just confusing myself. Basically as long as they are not too similar I'm fine with it, but blatant rip offs are just wrong.
Happy Hopping & Blogging. :D

Great answer! I agree that it's hard to not copy something in some way considering everything has been written at least once. But there's always a line they authors shouldn't cross. Old follower :)

Hopping through. Hmmm...a clown who runs from the circus to join a monastery? That would be an interesting story.

I agree. Well said. They need to bring something to the table that's not just a copycat version.

Thanks AnnMarie. :D Glad you agree.
Tanya- voice in a book is important and can make a story fresh.
Alison- lol! don't know how I came out with that. Got to love the randomness. I have filed it into my 'ideas' book though. :D
Thanks Jenny! Fresh and different is the way to go.

I agree! I don't mind as long as there seems to be some original thought put into the story.

I love retellings from different perspectives that are well done. But sometimes stories get saturated and I'm done with it.
