My Answer: I'm guessing this is another 'show us where you read' activity. I do most of my reading on the sofa at home which I have showed before on FF. Apart from that it's the staff room at work but I'm not there again till Monday so I can't show you a picture of that. 

So instead I am going to give you picture of my cats, because cats are cute, and who doesn't like a good cat picture on the internet!!!

Book Review - Wolf Princess

My Review
Every year at work they run a 'Children's Book of the Year' event - we get given about a dozen books to read then we all get together to discuss them, an author usually appears to do a talk and then we vote for our favourite book. This is the first one I picked up off that list for this year. 
I chose this one first because I liked the cover, the pages were purple and it looked pretty - shallow reasons I know, but you have to start somewhere!
Sophie Smith is at a boarding school in London, sent there by her guardian so that she is out of the way. Her parents are dead and her guardian isn't interested. She has her two friends and roommates, Delphine and Marianne by her side but she still wishes for more.
When she gets signed up to a trip to Russia with the school Sophie thinks her dreams will come true. She has always craved adventure and for some reason dreamt of the snowy magic of Russia. But when they get there Sophie and her friends end up on the wrong train and are then picked up by Anna Volkonskaya, a Princess and taken back to her palace. But it's a place of secrets and Sophie must discover the truth behind the dark corridors and ruined palace. 
To be honest I found the characters pretty one dimensional, nothing really stood out or made me care about them. I didn't really connect, and I pretty much guessed the whole 'mystery' straight away so the big end reveal wasn't that breath-taking. But maybe an 8-12 year old would be swept up by it all a bit more. 
The setting is described really well and is set up nicely, that is what really saved the book for me, the imagery of the Palace and woods was nice, I could picture the places and people, so I think children would be delighted with it. 
It's a fairly simple, rather uncomplicated story that would be good for readers gaining confidence and wanting a bit of adventure and a sense of mystery.
I liked it more than I thought I would but it wasn't the best thing I've ever read. But I would recommend it to my book group to try.

This week's question feature is SS Book Fantatics

What were some of your favorite picture books as a kid? If you have kids, what are your favorites to read to them?

My Answer: One of my favourites as a child was 'The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear' by Audrey and Don Wood.

I also loved 'Can't You Sleep Little Bear'. Such sweet books, had the entire series. 

There were probably a lot more but htose are the two that stand out in my memory.

Now that I work in the library I get to see so many of the awesome picture books that have been released and there are too many to list that I love, but I will share two of my top picks:

'It's the Bear' by Jez Alborough. - written in rhyme and so cute, a perfect one to read aloud.

'Down by the Cool of the Pool' by Tony Mitton - again it rhymes and it has great actions for kids to join in with. 

There are so many more but I'll leave it there.

Book Review - My Own Mr Darcy

My Review
I fell in love with Pride and Prejudice a few months ago when I got obsessed with the youtube series 'The Lizzie Bennett Diaries' after watching those I went back and re-read the book and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. So when I heard Kathy talking about this book and organizing a tour I was excited to sign up, especially because she was so excited about it too.
Elizabeth has obsessed about finding her perfect Darcy ever since being dragged to see Pride and Prejudice in the cinema by her mother. The idea has taken over her life and now in her 20's she has a history of failed dates and no prospect of love. Her best friend tells her that she has to give the next guy who asks her out a chance, and she does. Enter Chad, sweet, caring and a really nice guy. Clearly her friend was right, giving him a fair chance could be the best thing Lizzie ever does, until her 'dream man' walks into the bank where she works one day, she catches his eye and is immediately blown away, he looks and acts just like Darcy, this is her dreams come true.
Thus starts the problems, does she follow her years of dreams or go for a new one. 
I don't read many romances and I can say this one is 100% clean which is a bonus. But I found Elizabeth frustrating, to me it was so obvious what she should do and although she often comments that she doesn't want to string anyone along as it's not fair on him, she still does and I felt so sorry for him. In the moments when she is just being herself, and not obsessing over Darcy, I actually really liked her. She has a degree in Interior design and when she is working on a project she really comes to life and I liked her so much more as a character. But the constant indecision about what she wanted did irritate me a bit. 
As for Matt, the author did very well painting his similarities to Darcy, he was like a modern mirror image. But whereas you grow to love Darcy, I didn't grow to love Matt, in fact I wanted to tell him to go away and get his priorities right. 
The book is well written and the characters reflect very well on Austen's work and White has given them their own unique personalities and twists, but there was just a bit too much indecision for me. And it was very predictable, I knew who she would end up with pretty much straight off, but maybe that's normal in romances, as I said I don't tend to read them.
It was an enjoyable read and I did want to see it through, mostly for Chad. It's well written and flows well. Just not something I would usually pick. BUt if you want a nice light romance then this is worth picking up.

My Review
I got a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I read and loved book 1 and 2 in this series (the Blemished & The Vanished). I lapped them up and even read and devoured the two short story spin offs that were released. I had found a new series I loved and couldn't wait for more so I naturally accepted this one when I was offered the chance to review it.
Unfortunately I have a massive stack of review books so I couldn't read it straight away but I wish I had because it took me a while to get back into the story and remember who everyone was. It's a fairly sizeable cast of characters to remember so I had to get back into the swing of it. 
But once I did, it was like being welcomed back among friends, there were odd moments of confusion still, my brain just isn't what it used to be and there are even more people added into the mix but once I got myself focused there wasn't really a problem.
This book is packed full of action, it's pretty much a war book, there is fighting but don't worry the scenes aren't particularly brutal or bloody, it's more the effects of war on the people. The main cast of characters get split up and go in separate directions. The chapters alternate between them as they struggle to stay alive and find each other again. The main narrators are Mina, Daniel and Angie. And I have to admit I liked seeing the different characters and hearing their voices. I think Daniel is still my favourite, their is something so honest in his tone and his emotions really come through his voice.
I liked the unique twists and that Mina and Daniel aren't all loved up, I liked that they had conflict and struggle, it's how they pull through all that stuff that really matters.
I was glad to be back and immersed in such a fresh series and to find that I still loved it. 
I would definitely recommend this series but you have to start at book 1 to get the proper effect. So go and check it out!

My Review
Back in March I got an email asking if I would like to read a new book called Geek Girl, being a self-confessed Geek I was definitely interested and the book sounded great. I received my copy and I read it very quickly and fell in love with it. You can read my review of that one here. I couldn't wait for more from Holly and have been on the lookout ever since, so imagine my excitement when I got an email a couple of weeks ago asking if I would be happy to review book 2. Totally made my day and I agreed in a heartbeat. 
The book arrived on Friday but I was away for the weekend. It sat calling to me and by lunchtime Monday I couldn't wait anymore, I sat with my lunch and got stuck in, quickly disappearing into the pages. When it came time to go back to work I didn't want to leave it. I got home in the evening and just sat and read until I had finished it. Nothing could have pulled me away by this point.
Life hasn't got much better for Harriet, she is still a Geek and unpopular at school. She may be a model now but nothing seems to impress her fellow classmates. 
When her plans for what is supposed to be the 'best summer ever!' are ruined, she is devestated until the opportunity to go to Japan arises. This could be her chance to start anew, make a go of things and maybe finally grasp how the whole modelling thing is supposed to work. But life is never that simple and things start to unravel once more.
I really like Harriet, she totally reminds me of myself, she does her best and tries really hard but always ends up doing something wrong or falling over. I was never as brainy as Harriet, never will be, but I love all her little facts, and for someone so clever, she can be really stupid, which only makes me like her more!
Then there are the characters round her, the best friend is a bit of an air head but really cares about Harriet, her 'stalker' Toby makes me laugh, he is so obvious and hasn't got a clue but is totally sweet, then we have Nick. Nick, Nick, Nick, he is a cause of many problems for Harriet but also the solution to others, I couldn't decide whether I liked him or not, but then neither could Harriet really! He does have charisma though and you can't help but want them to work it out. 
Her agent still made me laugh, he makes the most ridiculous comments and calls people by a multitude of names but it's just his big personality. If I knew him in real life I would tell him to go away and be quiet, but in this book, it's great. 
I absolutely adore this series and I cannot wait to know more and see what craziness Harriet gets into next. 
Holly Smale has written a totally relate-able character and someone you will instantly love. Her writing flows and is so easy to get lost in. This is definitely one of my top series of the year! Can't wait for more.

I really enjoyed book 1 and couldn't wait to find out more. I was actually lucky enough to be a part of the Beta team for the new book 2 which is why there isn't a review for it. BUt I loved it just as much as the first and am excited to see even more from this series. 

If you are looking for a new series to get stuck into I would recommend this one. Audrey has a great voice and is very easy to identify with and carries you through her story until you feel like you are part of it.

The TBR Pile

Becky, thank you so much for having me on your blog! I love how the internet brings everyone closer, especially today because CANVAS BOUND is set in the UK (where you are) and my main character, Libby is from Michigan (where I am).

So I was perusing over Becky’s site to get a feel for the type of blog she has when I clicked on her To Be Read list and I’m pretty sure my jaw fell wide open. Not because there are a lot (200) books on this list, but because I have a similar list of my own with many of the same titles on it. (Shh! Do not tell my husband I already own most of them and they are in the back of my closet. We’ll keep that a secret between us, okay?)

The problem I have with my TBR pile is that I add more books to it than take away from it. I want to read them all RIGHT NOW, but finding time to read is like finding time to write, there’s just never enough of it to go around. The other problem is I’m a very slow reader. I can read about 40 pages an hour, that’s if I’m not interrupted by my husband or daughter and I don’t remember the last time I wasn’t interrupted.

What I love about my TBR pile though, is that it represents a wealth of writers who have come up with amazing stories to share with the world. They have persevered through rejection letters and submissions and edits and all the million little things an author has to do to become published.

I speak from experience when I say it’s worth it. All of it. And there are few greater joys than seeing your work in print. My TBR pile may continue to grow and I may never see my closet floor again, but I’m happy to keep supporting my fellow writers in making their dreams come true!

Q: It is up to you to do a Kickstarter campaign for your favorite book!!! Who are you casting for the main characters? 

My Answer: I have no idea, I can never cast anyone as I get such a good picture in my head of the character from reading it that I can never find anyone who matches it right. Most films that have come out like Hunger Games, Harry Potter etc have been cast perfectly but I had to see them first. I always struggle with this. 

So I am going to cheat and copy a Fantasy Casting I did back in 2010 for the 'Shiver' series by Maggie Stiefvater. Still love those books so why not!

 I think she would be amazing in this role.

Sam - Steven R McQueen

 I struggled to find a Sam, and this is the closest i could get.

Book Review - Skulduggery Pleasant: Last Stand of Dead Men

My Review
I am an absolutely massive Skulduggery fan, I think Derek Landy is a genius and a really cool guy, I've met him twice, follow his blog and stalk him on twitter. I shout about this series to anyone who will listen and try to get as many people to read it as possible. From the moment I picked up the first book I have been a die-hard fan, so why did I not get lost in this book? Why was I left feeling a bit disappointed? It feels like my world is crashing down around me, a world where Skulduggery doesn't sweep me up into the story and make me laugh, cry and scream just doesn't make sense, and this book just didn't do it for me. 
Is there something wrong with me? It just doesn't make sense. I think part of the problem is that I have waited for this book for so long and psyched it up in my head so much, I was literally counting down the days until the release. It was released on my Birthday and I was thrilled, but my copy didn't arrive until the following Tuesday, when I was back at work and had less time, so maybe having to squeeze reading it into odd minutes had an affect, instead of just sitting to read it in one as I usually do. Maybe I got so pumped, and I heard some rumours of things to come, people saying it was the most EPIC story yet, and that I would hate Derek for what he wrote after I had finished, I got so psyched up and expected all these emotions that I just feel deflated that I don't feel them. 
I mean this book has a lot of deaths and I didn't cry at any of them, and I should have!!! I won't say who dies, but really, what is wrong here? If you have read it you will know what I mean. That was a serious tears moment!

Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood, time, situation to read it. It's literally taken me over a week to finish it, and I know it's 604 pages but I could usually do that in one day if I went for it, or 2 if necessary, but I just couldn't get into it. I have had a ridiculously busy week and it has broken up my reading time. I also have a stack of review books that are due in like a week that I still haven't started!I can feel the pressure!!! Maybe I should have left this until I had more time, but I didn't want to catch any spoilers, and I wanted to talk about it with my friends who are fans. But if I could go back and change it, I would have waited.

Saying all that, it does still have it's charms, I chuckled at parts and still enjoyed the banter between Skulduggery and Valkyrie and even some of the other characters, that's part of what got me into the series in the first place, but there wasn't as much of it and I did miss that. Although, that made the moments it did happen all the more appealing.
I knew this book would be the 'War' book, so I expected battles and violence, and death and blood and general misery, but I missed the easy flow and giggles the characters usually offered. For me some of the war scenes just dragged on a little bit too long, I found my focus drifting, waiting for the outcome and the next scene. 

But saying all that, there are a lot of totally awesome events in this book and things that will make your heart beat a thousand times faster. Derek does have a real skill with his writing, that makes you have to keep reading. And his characters are pure gold, they are the ones that keep you interested. They feel real, like I know them. I can picture them all and feel like I have journeyed with them and grown up with them.

I am going to put this book away for a few months, read the stack of books that are piled up for reviews, release the pressure on me and then come back to this book with a fresh feel and re-read it. I hope then that I will recapture the magic and pure amazingness of Skulduggery and Derek Landy. Because I know this book isn't just good, I know it is amazing!!!
I am 99.9% sure that my problem with this book was purely down to me and my current position, I need to clear my schedule and reading pile a bit and then I can get totally immersed in this Epic tome. 
 Come on Skulduggery fans, give me a boost and make me see how awesome this was!

If you're not a fan, don't be disheartened by my review at all, start the series from the beginning and immerse yourself into that world, you will spot the awesome power of Landy and you won't be able to turn back.

My Answer: I should really look and see what is coming up to give me a chance to prepare. Sorry this is late, I had to film it, then upload it and I had to use my ipad to film it and it would only send the video over in 1 minute clips. Then I went out yesterday and didn't get a chance to edit it.  Never known such hard work! But anyway, I got there in the end, so here is my video - at last. :D

Hope it wasn't too long. I actually have a couple more odd shelves but would have to move things to show them and thought that was enough to be going on with. :D
