Book Tour - Emerald Isle

Hi. I’m author Kate Hinderer and I’m lucky enough to be guest posting for the day as part of the blog book tour for The Emerald Isle. This book is part paranormal, part contemporary fiction and has adventure, romance, suspense, and a whole lot of sand. I'm sharing a scene with you from the chapter of the book that I enjoyed writing the most. This is the part that I re-read and smile abut having crafted. It's raw and intense but oh-so crucial to the story. Hope you enjoy it.




Excerpt:

I could hear my name being called over and over again in panic. My eyes were open, or at least I thought they were. I couldn’t see anything. I felt grainy sand beneath me and wet hair clinging to my face and neck. My name again being called in urgency. And hands suddenly pressed rhythmically into the space between my ribcage. I coughed, convulsed and turned my head to spew salty ocean water onto the sandy beach next to me.

Realization hit like a crashing wave along the rocky cliffs at the north end of the island. Someone had tried to drown me and I’d very nearly taken a full breath under water. I shivered and blinked a few times to bring my vision back into focus. Tristan knelt next to me, his hands hovering over my abdomen, ready to start CPR again. Water dripped from the tips of his long black hair and ran in little streams down his face. His bare chest rose and fell quickly with his ragged breathing. I remembered seeing his face underwater as something, no as someone, pulled me further under. The picture remained scrambled in my mind, but the intent was clear. 

Adrenaline pumped through my veins. I sat up and scrambled across the ground, using a crab-crawl to get away from him. Tristan put his arms up claiming innocence where he knelt in the sand. His piercing blue eyes, which were a stormy blue tonight, never left my face. He didn’t move to close the 10-foot gap now between us, he sat there and warily watched.

“Audyn, you don’t think I…” he trailed off looking pained.

I moved further away trying to put as much distance as possible between us but knowing I didn’t have enough strength to stand-up and run if I needed to. My mind raced to find an escape route, knowing that without one I was a goner. I didn’t have the strength or the ability to fight back if he tried again.

“I pulled you out,” he whispered, dropping his arms. His fingers clenched into fists where they lay in the sand. “Stop and think. Close your eyes and remember what happened,” he begged, still whispering, his voice attempting to soothe me.

I shook my head, refusing to close my eyes again. My heart still raced from the knowledge I had nearly been killed. I wouldn’t open myself up to another attack so easily. But I turned away from Tristan and looked out at the water trying to remember how I ended up soaking wet, half dead on the beach.

Q: Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?

My Answer: I think my habits do change yeah. When I'm stressed or a bit down I like light books, sort of chick lit/contemporary. Something I don't really have to think too hard about. When I'm happy I can pretty much read anything I like, but tend to go for the longer fantasy books as I have to be in the right mindset to read them. I like long books but they can be daunting! So a light mood can life me along.

My Answer: this is really like picking your top 3 favourite reads isn't it? I always find that hard. My games are competitive and like the Olympic there is more than one category

Author Bio:

Dusty Crabtree has been a high school English teacher at Yukon High School in Oklahoma since 2006, a challenge she thoroughly enjoys. She is also a youth sponsor at Cherokee Hills Christian Church in Oklahoma City and feels very blessed with the amazing opportunities she has to develop meaningful relationships with teens on a daily basis.  Her passion for teens has poured into her writing as well.  She is the author of the young adult urban fantasy, Shadow Eyes, through Musa Publishing, which she wrote in order to give teens an intriguing and provocative book series that promotes moral messages.  She lives with her husband, Clayton, in Yukon, Oklahoma, where they often serve their community as foster parents.

Many writers say they always knew they wanted to be a writer.  My writing journey was slightly different.  Sure I occasionally attempted short stories as a child…that I never finished, but since then I didn’t think about writing fiction until just before starting my young adult urban fantasy, Shadow Eyes.  In truth, I never would have become a writer if it hadn’t have been for two things: my friend’s suggestion and a crazy, unique idea that ignited my passion and wouldn’t leave me alone.  In fact, the best advice I give to aspiring authors is to come up with a concept that is so amazing and that you are so passionate about that you will never get bored with it and never want to give up.

The idea for Shadow Eyes actually first came to me as a screenplay for a Christian horror movie, if there ever was such a genre.  The movie would have been about a cast of intertwined characters going about their lives and making mistakes with dark, creepy shadows (demons) hovering around them, whispering to them, and influencing them to do evil things.  Only the audience would see the shadows.  The characters would be completely oblivious.  I could see it all in my head, and it was awesome!  But I had no idea how to write a screenplay.

A few years after I’d had that idea, my friend suggested I should write a novel like the paranormal angel books we’d been reading and loving.  I’d always loved the concept of angels and demons in stories and immediately thought back to that screenplay idea.  After realizing 3^rd person omniscient was not a great narrator choice for a novel, I decided on a 1^st person narrator, Iris, who had a special ability to see the shadows, as well as light figures (angels), but nobody else could. 

The more the story developed in my mind, the more crazy I was about it.  All the mysterious characters, the big mystery about what happened to Iris when she was 14 that first gave her the ability, her making mistakes and discovering who these characters were and, more importantly, who she was – all of it just fell into place on an outline out of my crazy, overly-creative, overly-stimulated mind.  Shadow Eyes, my pride and joy, my baby, is the result.

My Review 
I did a promotion post for 'Taken At Dusk' which is book 3 in the series. The book sounded really good so I decided to look up the series and ordered them from the library. Of course I ordered the whole series, I like to have them all ready to read if I know it's a series. Of course frustratingly book 3 arrived first, so I had to wait for it, but at last I had them all.
Kylie's life isn't what she htought it would be, at 17 her boyfriend has left her for another girl, her parents are getting divorced and she is being stalked by a crazy guy in army uniform that no-one else can see. When she is caught at a party and arrested her mum decides to send her to a Summer Camp called Summer Falls. Kylie has heard it's a place for Juvenile Delinquents, kids known for taking drugs, committing crimes etc, her life officially sucks!
But this camp isn't what she expects and she finds a whole new world waiting for her.
This book is instantly gripping, I'm not even sure why, but for some reason I couldn't step away from it. I immediately wanted to know what Kylie was and what would happen to her. I loved the idea of the summer camp, it was so well set out and the imagery allowed me to picture everything in my head clearly. I swear it was like I was almost there with Kylie and her new friends. 
I loved the host of characters, Kylie is instantly likeable and I had to know more, and the others around her only improve the story and become like long lost friends. I loved 'Della's' attitude and quick retorts, Miranda's sensibility but also fun, and Derek. Yay Derek. Lucas is the mystery man, a remnant from her past, now back in her life, but I definitely know which 'team' I would be on. Derek all the way!
Each time I sat down with this book I only intended to be there for half an hour, but on both occassions I was there for just under 2 hours and so finished it in two sittings. This book is certainly addictive.
I love the world Hunter has created and I can't wait to get stuck into book 2 (Awake At Dawn)
And I have to just add. I think the covers are gorgeous and very cool.
