Emma Michaels is the author of the ‘A Sense of Truth’ and ‘Society of Feathers’ series. Her goal with her latest YA novel 'Owlet' is to give others what she did not have growing up; a strong female protagonist with asthma. While her previous aspiration was to be a lady knight she realized that not being able to run more than a few feet might become a hindrance so turned to writing instead. These are a Few of My Favorite Things
*breaks into song* Yes, breaking out randomly into song is definitely one of my favorite things. Okay, maybe not but I am a goof ball so whether it is a favorite thing or not it is still a bound to happen.
Have you ever noticed how writers tend to keep their favorite things close? Not only do these things act as comfort items, but they help us find the inspiration we need to keep writing. Writer’s block? Listening to my favorite song or enjoying a piece of chocolate always helps me.
I keep things that I love near to me. These can include my fiancé, my Chihuahua, my iPad 2, and anything I can write on. But my favorite things are not only limited to objects or people, but also what I like to do. I love to fence, garden, play Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO), create silk screen designs and ultimately, experience as many things as possible.
I also love visiting museums and keeping a very small collection of knickknacks in my favorite wooden carved box. I love feathers, Doctor Who, USB drives and erasers, pins and stickers. I’m random, but I have many favorite things that make me who I am. These are only a few of my favorite things, but it is me. Want to learn more? Read Owlet! There is so much of me in there. “Iris, I want you to take a trip. I cannot go with you but I feel you need company. Diana will be going in my place, making sure that you are all right.” Her father started to explain but he stopped when Diana pushed her way past him and into the hallway. Following her out, he closed the door behind them.
“I can’t do it. I can’t go there. Please.” Iris could hear the words coming through the door. “You know. I know that you know.”
“Shh! Stop this right now.” Iris could hear their footsteps leading away from the door, but as she stared at the blood oxygen meter encasing on her middle finger, her father came right back in. Offering a strained smile, she spoke, “She forgot to book the tickets. I sent clothes and medicine ahead but must have forgotten about the flight.” Roger was looking at Iris strangely, waiting for her to say anything in return.
Lies. That was a lie. Don’t let him lie to you.
