World Book Day

So, in case you didn't realise today was World Book Day! I love this day every year, it promotes what we are all about - the love of Reading.
It's a great way to get children excited about books.

All of the schools around my area did something to celebrate. Children and staff were dressed up. One of my local schools had author 'Teri Terry' in to do a talk about her book 'Slated'. Some had parties and others gave out free books.

As you probably know by now I work in a library. What did we do to celebrate? Well, sadly not much this year, we just didn't have the time, staff or resources to get anything organised, hopefully next year we will do something bigger. I think it's important to take part in these events.

Anyway, we had a storytime for a local playgroup and we gave out the £1 World Book Day tokens, which I love. Each year they produce a selection of short books from various authors that kids can get in exchange for their token. For more info on this year's choices click here.

I put up a big piece of paper on the wall and left a pen by it, with the heading saying 'It's World Book Day - Share your love of books and tell us your favourites.'
I didn't check it much through the day but I know all the staff wrote on it, our picks included 'The Hunger Games' by Suzanne Collins, 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' by C.S Lewis, 'The Gruffalo' by Julia Donaldson, 'Each Peach Pear Plum' by Janet & Allan Ahlberg, 'The Borrowers' by Mary Norton and loads more. I'll check when I'm next in and see what else we had written on.

I also decided to dress up for the day. I didn't have much time or resources but I love this character anyway. I'm kind of obsessed with it. Any ideas?

Sorry it's really blurry. I was Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games. Really simple costume - but yes I did have the Mockingjay pin.

I even did a bit of make up to give me some battle wounds.
It was quite funny, I had at least 5 people look at me in shock and ask if I was OK! Again, sorry the pic is a bit blurry. Some people that came in just gave me weird looks, others chose to ignore it and a few asked me why. The best ones were the concerned and confused looks - like they were trying to decide whether or not to ask me if I needed help. :P

So anyway, really just wanted to share my costume and spread my love for 'World Book Day', here's to many more years.

Did you do anything to celebrate? Let me know in the comments below. Any ideas for next year? :D
